Malpractice in Severing the Median Nerve During Surgery to Relieve Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by pressure on the median nerve in the carpal tunnel, which is in the wrist. The median nerve originates in the brachial plexus, continues through the arm, passes through the carpal tunnel into the hand. It innervates the palmar side of the thumb, index, and middle finger. Damage to the median nerve can cause significant impairment in the function of the hand, loss of strength, and pain.

Carpal tunnel surgery involves the cutting of the transverse carpal ligament to relieve pressure on the median nerve. Care must be taken not to injure the median nerve during this surgery.

Weisfuse & Weisfuse LLP represented a woman who suffered serious injury to her left hand caused when the surgeon severed the median nerve during carpal tunnel surgery.

This was malpractice and the surgeon’s insurer paid $2,300,000, which was the full extent of the surgeon’s insurance coverage, to settle.
